Like Black Lion Audio's B173 quad preamplifier, the circuit design of the single-channel B173 MKII is based on the classic circuitry, transporting the legendary fat, warm British sound into modern times. For an even cleaner and less distortion sound, the gain stage has been significantly redesigned. Two large-format controls for input and output levels allow a sensitive dosage of the sound coloration by the transformers, so that all sound variations from velvety elegant to rich and overtone-rich are immediately available. With the B173 MKII from Black Lion Audio, the classic sound that has made England's audio technology world-famous is available in a modern and compact form.

Please give a warm welcome to all 70dB of Black Lion Audio's latest iteration of 1073-style gain, the B173 Quad! Rather than "just another clone," the B173 Quad seamlessly combines vintage character with modern sensibilities in a stylish 2U chassis with a feature set to satisfy the most demanding of audio engineers. A revamped gain stage and lower noise floor pave the way to a cleaner, lower distortion sound, while Cinemag input and output transformers keep things smooth and warm. Two front panel D.I.'s impart a harmonically rich tone to guitars, keyboards, and synthesizers, and stepped input gain and variable output attenuation allow for perfect control over transformer saturation. Metering on all 4 channels displays how hot your output signal is hitting the parallel TRS/XLR outputs, and an external power supply keeps noise out of your tracks!

The “Bluey” is a modified “Blue Stripe” compressor based off of the “golden” unit owned by Chris Lord-Alge. When certain components became unavailable, techs were forced to change the circuit, creating a one of a kind compressor that has been heard on countless hits.Any audio engineer worth their weight in gear will tell you about the special moments that occur on records by chance. We’re talking about the magic you can’t plan. It must occur organically, being comprised of sheer randomness or even flat out mistakes. For instance, the spontaneous banter from a vocalist in between takes that adds character to a track, or a radical new audio effect discovered through a simple routing mistake. The same good fortune sometimes shines upon a piece in the vintage gear world. Through decades of maintenance and repair, some units, like wine, get better with time. The scarcity of original parts leads technicians to diverge from the original design, creating an improved, one-of-a-kind, modified unit.Armed with an impeccable ear, decades of experience, and an abundance of coveted gear, legendary mix engineer, Chris Lord-Alge, was able to recognize one of his four 1176 Blue Stripe units as firmly sitting in this distinctive category. The particular unit, dubbed “Bluey,” has a special “mojo” to it that shines on vocal tracks like no other.Chris desired more channels of this golden unit, and reached out to the guys who know modifications best – the team at Black Lion Audio! Intrigued by Chris’ praise of the unit, head design engineer, Jesus Ortiz, boarded a plane from Chicago to LA to discover what gave this Blue Stripe its edge. He found a series of mods done to the unit over the years to keep it working that miraculously cumulated in a uniquely beast-like 1176! BLA analyzed the unit with pain-staking detail, and has, in conjunction with Chris Lorde-Alge, recreated the monster, now known as the new Black Lion Audio “Bluey!”

Black Lion Audio’s Eighteen starts with a vintage-inspired preamplifier — providing a creamy, yet punchy response. They topped that off with a passive induction-based program equalizer and output controls for pushing the analog stages to pure overdriven-bliss that’s still safe for your convertors and DAW.
Eighteen’s preamplifier circuit isn’t just another clone, but an homage built to pay proper tribute to some of the most classic designs ever made. That’s why Black Lion created the BLA1831: a customized, discrete op-amp created through an extensive period of component testing — creating great vintage tone, while still matching a noise floor that’s akin to modern equipment.
Eighteen packs an impressive, original passive inductor-based equalizer that you’re sure to love — featuring a custom Cinemag inductor made just for Eighteen! The results are amazing; a quiet, and ultra-flexible equalizer that packs all of the vibe of your favorite program-style EQ’s.
Eighteen’s features don’t stop there: it also features a custom-wound Cinemag transformer for the output, as well as output gain control for pushing the unit into pure overdriven-bliss. Black Lion Audio designed, engineered, assembles, and tests each unit by hand in the USA.
Introducing the Micro Clock mk2, a completely revolutionary design in external clocking from Black Lion Audio. The Micro Clock mk2 is a radical departure in design from its predecessor. It features ultra-low jitter third order crystal oscillators with a revolutionary patent-pending high current parallel drive circuit designed to increase the amount of desirable harmonics within the clock's spectral band. In addition to this, our proprietary noise reduction circuitry dramatically eliminates the unwanted switching harmonics normally found in digital signals. These are musically unrelated signals that create distortion and phase cancellation within the converted audio signal. Because of these technological advances, the Micro Clock mk2 is one of the best performing external word clocks within the pro audio market today.
When we introduced the Micro Clock mk2 we didn't anticipate the amount of demand and controversy that managed to accompany it. External clocking is certainly a hot button issue. Some folks maintain that there's no basis for it; that it's a sort of modern "emperor's new clothes." The reasoning behind this is that the device being clocked externally will simply filter the incoming clock signal through its phase lock loop, thereby eliminating any sort of benefit associated with the superior clock. In addition, the simple act of accepting the incoming signal and creating a new signal that's in phase will add some jitter.
The biggest problem with this theory is that we know nothing about the PLL filter in question; it's completely hypothetical. Many PLL's in pro audio are designed to filter out unwanted signals that are outside of the desired bandwidth, although some are configured to filter out unwanted harmonics that lie within the signal's frequency band. It's incredibly rare to find one that does both at the same time. In the case of the Micro Clock mk2, there is very little undesirable in-band or out of band content (below 10 picoseconds using a Delta Sigma average). There is, however, an abundance of desirable harmonically related in-band spectral content; more so than the average internal clock. No PLL filter is designed to remove these desirable harmonics; they're busy trying to remove the unwanted stuff. Simply put, the Micro Clock mk2 will not only provide audible improvement to your conversion process, but it will do it as well as or better than any other external clock on the market today.SPECIFICATIONS
Output: 3 galvanic-isolated BNC with fixed 75 ohm terminations @ 6 volts peak to peak
Power: 9-12 volts DC
Sampling rates: six selectable rates, 44.1 kHz-192 kHz
Jitter: maximum 1 pico second of intrinsic jitter, less than 10 picoseconds of accumulated jitter measured using a delta sigma averaging method.
The Micro Clock mk2 is simple and probably even boring looking by most standards. It's housed in a rugged yet basic 3 inch by 4 inch chassis that provides optimum RF shielding. It has no lights, no frequency display, and none of the usual visual candy that your friends might envy, but that's because those items create unwanted noise that affect the signal. For a modest black box, it does its job incredibly well and at a price that's unheard of for this level of performance!
The power supply is 12 volts DC using a wall wart that's capable of accepting both 120 and 240 volts AC. It features six selectable output frequencies from 44.1 kHz on up to 192 kHz. Output level is approximately 4 volts peak to peak. Jitter at the crystal oscillator is approximately 1 picosecond RMS, and it's just under 10 picoseconds RMS at the output. Both of these figures are obtained using a Delta Sigma averaging method. The Micro Clock mk2 is compatible with all modern digital devices that have 75 ohm BNC word clock input.
Features
Ultra-low jitter, harmonically-enhanced word clock signal generation
Dimmable frequency display
8 selectable sample rates (44.1kHz, 48kHz, 88.2kHz, 96kHz, 176.4kHz, 192kHz, 352.8kHz, and 384kHz)
6 BNC outputs with dedicated output drivers for maximum isolation
RCA S/PDIF output
Optical S/PDIF output
AES output
1U removable rack ears
The Micro Clock MkIII is a significant redesign of its predecessor, the Micro Clock MkII. Core technological improvements include lower-jitter crystal oscillators, higher-quality galvanic transformer isolation in the signal path, dedicated output drivers with better isolation, higher-precision signal division, and much heavier noise filtration throughout the circuit. All of this results in a more robust, lower-jitter clock signal than the Micro Clock MkII, with even more desirable harmonics in the clock’s spectral band that impart an undeniable musical quality to the conversion process. The feature set has expanded to include an LED frequency display, six BNC outputs capable of up to 384kHz, AES and RCA S/PDIF outputs capable of up to 192kHz, an optical S/PDIF output capable of up to 96kHz, and removable 1U rack ears.
Product Description
The Micro Clock MkIII is the culmination of almost 10 years of research involving jitter- reducing, harmonic-enhancing design techniques not found in any other master word clocks on the market. It not only can sync all of your digital audio gear together, but can significantly improve the sound quality as well. It may be the most significant single upgrade you can make to your digital audio setup. Get ready to hear what you’ve been missing!
We spent the better part of a year field-testing the Micro Clock MkIII XB prior to its release, and got a lot of positive feedback on the impact it made in a wide variety of setups. Its small form factor and its ability to drive up to 1,000 feet of coaxial cable make it not only the perfect solution for improving the conversion quality of an audio interface, but also for re-clocking digital mixing consoles at live shows or houses of worship, and as the master word clock in large post-production or broadcast facilities. It can easily sync all of your digital gear together, even if it’s located in different rooms, or different buildings!
