Using the microphone at short distances increases the proportion of direct sound, and balances the built-in low-frequency rolloff with proximity effect. The ”popping” effect on spoken consonants is substantially reduced by the built-in pop filter, and is even further reduced by the low-frequency rolloff of the microphone.
